I love that the organizer of the Socrates Cafe in Beaumont, Texas, sees that his group is a thriving one, even though attendance each gathering is just a bit more than a handful.  Numbers aren’t the name of the game with Socrates Cafe and attendance. Even if it’s just a few, or six, it can be transformative for those involved, a real life changer.  It’s also cool that serendipity played a bit of a role in the initial gathering, since, as Mike Soniat relates, the one person who came that night besides him almost turned around and left.

Here’s Mike Soniat’s enthused email to me:

Hi Chris,

I just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how things are going with my Meetup group: Socrates Café Beaumont https://www.meetup.com/Socrates-Cafe-Beaumont/.

I had my first meeting on January 9th of this year. It was just me and one other guy. In fact, he almost left before we met because he didn’t see a group there. Luckily, he messaged me on Meetup.com and I went and found him. We had a nice talk about everything from politics, to religion, to what we did for a living. But we did remember to pick a topic for our next meeting.

Since then I’ve had six more meetings; about one every two weeks. For most of those, we’ve had four “regular” attendees plus a couple of new people here and there. Our last meeting had 11 people attend! I just booked our next meeting for the 24th and I already have 8 RSVPs!

Anyway, it’s really been a great experience so far. Everybody says they can’t believe we have such a group in Beaumont, Texas and I can’t believe it either. I’ve lived in this town for over 20 years and had no idea there were people interested in this type of discussion.

I really want to thank you for creating this wonderful idea and providing information to newbies like me. I also bought your book on Amazon and it’s been a great resource. I’ve even shared some of the stories with the group.

Well, that’s all for now.
